Young woman celebrates first steps after brain injury

The college student has walked her own ‘mini-marathon’ after overcoming adversity from a brain infection.

Yoki Mekuri, 23, suffered a brain infection in 2008 which left her immobile and unable to speak. She was referred to a rehabilitation centre, Enable Care in Chingford in 2011 and it is here where, this month she managed to walk 200m in one hour. She said: "I am speechless that I completed that walk, it was like a mini-marathon." Therapist, Ashley Ryan said: "The average person would walk 200m in a minute; she was determined to do it and did it in an hour. Yoki is an inspiartion and I cry every time I think about what she has achieved. "She was an adult who became a child again and has had to relearn everything."
