Teenager’s chess victory following brain injury

Sam Richards fell from play equipment and wasn’t expected to remember anything.

Originally published in Essex County Standard  The 19-year-old from Essex has proved all the experts wrong by making impressive progress sinc the accident in 2012. His mother, Teresa bought him a chess set for his birthday in October. She said: “I knew deep down he would remember. “He has done brilliantly and he’s even beaten people over Christmas. “Considering they said he wouldn’t remember anything, he’s proved everyone wrong.” Sam is currently using a touch screen tablet to communicate and can answer yes and no questions. He is also set to get a walker to provide support while he learns to walk, despite predictions he would never be on his feet again.
