Top surfer’s brain injury leads to lawsuit

Gwen Spurlock was only a teenager when she was thrown from a wave simulator.

The accident happened at a Swansea leisure centre in 2008 when the 16-year-old had just been crowned Britain's number one junior and senior women surfer. She required brain surgery twice following the incident, suffered memory problems and lost out on modelling assignments and championship surfing events. Miss Spurklock was awarded more than £250,000 compensation from Bay Leisure but now the company are hoping to recoup the sum from the simulator's manufacturers.
