Stop the DLA Takeaway

Update in the campaign which is calling for Government to abolish the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) regulation that suspends benefits for disabled children in hospital.

A family has been granted permission to take their legal challenge against the so-called '84-day rule' to the Supreme Court. Cameron Mathieson from Warrington had very complex medical needs and passed away in 2012 aged five, having spent more than half his life in Alder Hey Hospital. During this time Cameron fell foul of the rule, whereby DLA payments are suspended for under-16s when they spend more than 84 days in hospital. According to the family, this caused financial hardship as they balanced their caring responsibilities with keeping normal family life going for their other children. The Mathiesons say they are mounting their legal challenge so that no other family with a disabled child in hospital will have essential financial support taken away from them.
