Ryan continues to defy odds

The continued improvement of Ryan Smith, who had a cycling accident, has been captured on video. Watch the video by clicking link at end of this story. The 17-year-old from Lincolnshire has started to walk again for the first time without a frame. His dad, Mark credits his son's competitive nature in helping him improve so much. He said: "Ryan was always first in everything. "Second is not an option for Ryan. That's the winning character that's driving us all forward."  » A Photo journey of Ryan's brain injury and recovery.  Discussing how hydrotherapy has encouraged Ryan's walking, he added: "The wobbles all slipped up to under his chest and the bottom part of his body sort of fell to the floor of the pool. "And Ryan was suddenly stood up and we thought: 'What have we got to lose'." As well as support from Mark, Ryan's mum, Julie and sister, Rachael have also been instrumental in his care and recovery. Discussing Ryan's walk, featured here, Mark says: "It's the best walk we've ever witnessed. He was practically weightless and was picking his left leg up at the knee which we've not seen before so it goes to show that the left side is getting stronger.
