New support hub tackles sleep deprivation for families raising disabled children

Tired Out, a new sleep support hub, launches to support parents and carers of disabled children to sleep better.
Tired Out
Tired Out was created by Family Fund, the UK’s largest charity supporting families raising disabled and seriously ill children and young people with grants and services. Tired Out aims to support families by pulling together information and resources about sleep and putting them in one place. This includes information about UK-wide support available to families in their local area, useful sleep tips and a wide range of research, resources and stories from families themselves. Family Fund believes that all families raising disabled and seriously ill children and young people should have the same opportunities as others. In 2013 Family Fund gathered feedback from over 2,000 parents and carers across the UK about the impact of sleep difficulties on households. The subsequent report, Tired all the Time, revealed the startling findings that 93% of parents and carers were up in the night caring for their disabled child. Parents and carers reported how they experienced significant financial, social and emotional challenges as a direct result of not having enough sleep. They wanted to be listened to, heard and also be better able to access information and support. Following Tired All the Time, Family Fund made a commitment to do more and help families bridge the gap to a better night’s sleep, and have spent the last 18 months sourcing funding and working in partnership with leading organisations across the charity, disability and academic sectors to create Tired Out. These partners play a key role to keep the site content up-to-date and relevant, to better support families raising disabled children and young people. Dame Christine Lenehan, Director of the Council for Disabled Children, said “Sleep is fundamental for good physical and mental health and it’s often a fundamental that families of disabled children are denied. The sleep hub is an innovative programme that brings together all the resources into one place and helps to an ultimate goal – that a good night’s sleep is realised for both parent and child. I wish it every success.” Cheryl Ward, Chief Executive of Family Fund, said
I recall vividly the findings of Tired All the Time, and the daily mental, physical and emotional challenges that families told us they face when sleep eludes them night after night. For many families, sleepless nights continue on relentlessly, year after year, sometimes well into adulthood, with often varying levels of support or advice available.”"
“Our purpose is to make life easier for families, and Tired Out provides us with an incredible opportunity to bring together advice and information to help families cope better, and show families how to gain access to vital support. It also allows us to share where the gaps in the support might be so that we can build further partnerships with a range of organisations and work together to help families in new and innovative ways.” The sleep hub is for both families and professionals working in the sector, and aims to be a supportive network to share experiences and learn from others. Family Fund is keen for Tired Out to be used as widely as possible, and is encouraging people to share the site amongst friends and contacts who could benefit from its information and resources.
