James Cracknell, MEP?

Olympic gold medallist and Children’s Trust supporter James Cracknell has announced he is to stand as a Member of the European Parliament.

Mr Cracknell – who ran the London Marathon for the Trust last year – sustained a brain injury in 2010 while attempting a gruelling coast-to-coast challenge in the USA. He and his wife Beverley Turner have written movingly about their experiences of acquired brain injury in their book Touching Distance. Now Mr Cracknell intends to stand as the Conservative candidate for the European Parliament for the South West in next year’s May elections. He told the Telegraph Hay Festival that he wants to ‘give something back’ as an MEP.
