It’s Mencap’s Learning Disability Week – celebrating the superheroes in every family

Mencap - the national learning disability charity - is calling on families across the country to celebrate their own superheroes.

The charity, which works to change laws, challenge prejudice and support people with learning disabilities, stages its Learning Disability Week each year.

The theme this year is ‘to bring people together to celebrate our family life and to develop new, strong family networks in our local communities’. Mencap is searching for the superheroes in the lives of every person with a learning disability. "We think real people can be like superheroes too!" Mencap proclaims. "The families we work with are amazing. We think there are brave and selfless superheroes and this year we want to make sure everyone knows it!" You can share your story with Mencap on Twitter or Facebook, post a photo or write down who your superhero is and what their ‘special powers’ are. Superhero costumes are not essential, but definitely encouraged. Mencap will be gathering stories together so that everyone can see how many superheroes there are - they'll do this using the hashtag #LDWeek13.
