Fury at "disabled children should be put down" comment

Campaigners and families from across the country have expressed their horror after a councillor said children with disabilities “should be put down” because of the cost of their care. Councillor Collin Brewer of Cornwall Council made the comments in 2011 to a member of Disability Cornwall. The local authority’s Standards Committee conducted an investigation and has just reported its findings, prompting an apology from Cllr Brewer. But the furious reaction to his comments suggest this will not be enough. A Facebook group dedicated to ousting him from office has been started, while campaigning group Every Disabled Child Matters has set out how to make a complaint to Cornwall Council through its own Facebook page. Disability charity Scope has said the councillor’s “outrageous” views belong to another age. At the time of writing (4pm, Wednesday, February 27), Cllr Brewer was considering his position.
