First families move to new benefits system

Families in some parts of the UK will be living with major changes to their benefits from today (Monday, April 8). People in the North East and North West of England are the first to see the transition from the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) to Personal Independence Payments (PIP). The change is being introduced in some parts of the country ahead of a national roll-out, which the Government says will focus spending on those who need it most. People with disabilities will be subject to more frequent assessments under the new system, with the aim of reducing the number of people given lifetime awards. But disability charity Scope says the move is purely to save money, and that some 600,000 people will eventually lose their financial support. Read the story at the BBC.
