Disabled Children’s Partnership launches new campaign

The Children’s Trust have joined forces with over 40 charities to launch a new campaign, The Secret Life of Us, as part of the Disabled Children’s Partnership

Together, the coalition will campaign for improved health and social care for disabled children, young people and their families. The campaign has been started to address four big challenges that disabled children and their families face:
  • There are not enough services available
  • Many of those that exist are not good enough
  • Families cannot access them easily
  • Services do not always work together and communicate well with each other.
The coalition is calling for improvements to the services and support that disabled children and their families receive, after a survey found a significant number of families aren’t getting the support they need. The survey showed:
  • More than 4 in 5 parents of a disabled child face problems accessing the services they need, with 56% believing this has a negative impact on their child’s health and well-being and half saying it affects their ability to make friends.
  • 3 in 4 parents with a disabled child have experienced mental health issues, compared to 1 in 6 in the general population.
  • More than 9 in 10 parents believe the needs of their disabled child would not be met if they could no longer care for them.
  • Just 10% of families believe that the health and social care services in their area meet the needs of their disabled child.
