Disability benefits shakeup goes national

Thousands of families across England, Scotland and Wales will be affected by a new system of disability benefits, which comes into effect today.

Personal Independence Payments, or PIPs, are replacing the Disability Living Allowance (DLA). Under the new system, all new claimants will be subject to in-person assessments, as opposed to the previous system, which saw claimants fill out an application form. The Governments says the aim is to target resources at the claimants who need them most. The system is already in place in some parts of northern England. But disability charity Scope has warned that more than 600,000 people will now lose out on the benefit, and says the Government is simply trying to save money. Northern Ireland will adopt the scheme later.  Read more at the BBC.
