Brain injury no barrier to student’s top marks

Despite sustaining a serious brain injury in a horror car crash, Paul McDermott is celebrating after achieving full marks in his exams.

The student from Londonderry gained the equivalent of three A*s at A Level and has been accepted to study law at university. Paul sustained his brain injury three years ago from a car accident. He had to be resuscitated three times, was in a coma for nine days, and suffered bleeding in the brain and extensive memory loss. He was forced to abandon his career as a car mechanic, due to the damage but with the help of a local charity and occupational therapists decided to embark upon a course of academic study with the long term aim of becoming a lawyer. He has gained the highest mark possible after studying for a Level Three Extended Diploma in Business Studies. Read more here
