BBC Three – The Unbreakables: Life and Love on Disability Campus

As part of BBC Three’s Defying the Label season, starting tonight at 9pm is a powerful three-part series introducing us to the everyday antics of students living away from home for the very first time as they experience studying, dating and partying. At National Star College in Gloucestershire, the thrills and spills of college life are just the same, except that all the children have disabilities.

National Star College in Gloucestershire is a specialist further education college for people with physical disabilities, acquired brain injuries and associated learning difficulties. Life at National Star is very different to life outside, as we find in Episode One when we meet Beth in the Welsh Valleys who is preparing to leave home for the first time and start at the college. Beth can’t wait to meet new friends and soon falls for Ed, but has to come to terms with his learning difficulty, which is causing him to believe that he is a retired premiership footballer. The cameras follow the dynamic and energetic college life which includes all-campus events such as sports day, summer balls and the election of a new Student Union president. Also moving to the college is Nicki from St Albans, Herts, who sustained a brain injury after a horrific car accident on her way to her school prom. The brain injury wiped out a year’s worth of memories but with the help of family and therapists she managed to make a long and painful recovery. It took her two years to learn to speak again, which she spent in hospitals and rehabilitation centres. She left home in April 2012 to spend the next three years and National Star College. The programme follows the start of the romance between Nicki and fellow student Liam Jones, who has cerebral palsy. The students starring in the series have high aspirations; while Nicki dreams of acting, another student, Dan Mai, who has cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus, would love to be a radio DJ. The school does an excellent job of improving the students’ independence and confidence, putting them one step closer to making their dreams a reality. The Unbreakables will move you to laughter and to tears as you witness these honest and inspiring stories of young people overcoming the odds.
