Australian cricketer dies after severe head injury

Australia cricketer Phillip Hughes has died aged 25, two days after being struck on the top of the neck by a ball during a cricket match in Sydney.

Phillip Hughes
He never regained consciousness following the injury on Tuesday.  He passed away surrounded by his family and close friends. Hughes died as a result of "vertebral artery dissection".   This is a very rare condition which occurs when the vertebral artery is compressed, causing it to split and leading to a "massive bleed" into the brain. Our thoughts go out to Phil Hughes' family and friends at this very difficult time.
